{"id":2096,"date":"2022-10-24T08:44:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-24T08:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iamdanram.com\/blog\/?p=2096"},"modified":"2022-10-24T08:43:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-24T08:43:37","slug":"5-common-storytelling-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iamdanram.com\/blog\/5-common-storytelling-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Common Storytelling Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Guest Blog by Tina Bakehouse<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you work for a nonprofit or have your own business, telling your story is important, and telling it well is even more important. <br>In my experience, I\u2019ve found individuals making these five common storytelling mistakes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The storyteller fails to have a clear purpose.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to presenting your story ask yourself, \u201cWhat do you want the story to do for you?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you want to grow your business?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Do you want to inspire others?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What is it you want the audience to do with your information?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The storyteller goes on too long with their story.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easier to talk on and on, adding unnecessary details.&nbsp; Your audience has shortened attention-spans; therefore, it\u2019s crucial to get to the point quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>Just like the elevator pitch has decreased in length over time (from 5 minutes to now 30 seconds or less), take the time to structure your story and share what\u2019s essential.&nbsp;<br>Your audience will thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The storyteller is unsure with how to start their story.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a strong beginning. Go beyond introducing your name or business. Hook your audience to choose to listen to your message.&nbsp; <br>Put them in the story as soon as you can, so they can feel the emotions and connect with your message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The storyteller fails to present a clear and powerful ending.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like you need to know how you\u2019re going to start, clearly know how you\u2019re going to end. Do more than discuss a tragedy or \u201csomething bad that happened.\u201d&nbsp; <br>Build from the conflict to end in a way that rings true to the purpose of your story.&nbsp; Share your transformation to your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The storyteller neglects to let go of their ego.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re telling your story to an audience, it\u2019s easy to make it all about you.&nbsp; <br>It\u2019s all about your audience.&nbsp;If the audience wasn\u2019t there to listen, would the story ever happen? <br>You want them on your journey.&nbsp; To feel your feelings.
